I saw so many questions of Indonesians want to know about buying stock in the US market. I never thought about it until I am involved in "taking care" of it as a part of my work.
It's not technically mine lol, it's my boss. But, that way I learned a lot about the US and Canadian markets. What we bought for the first time was Disney. DIS.NYSE. It's on NYSE, which means it is in the US market.
So, my boss is Canadian. I didn't know that he can buy stocks in the US market that easily. What a perk of being a non-Indonesian 😅 Long story short, we got our first stock. Then we buy other stocks.
Funny to see how the banking sector most of the time is so stable.
After a few months, they're having ups and downs. We have them working great but why is it seen red in our portfolio? The culprit is the currency exchange. We lost a lot in currency. We use Sharesight to check on them easily because we have them all from different markets.
It's only from Canadian Dollar to USD (and vice versa). But the loss we usually have on average is 0,5-1% of the total stocks and funds we have. It seems just a little, not even 1% but when we buy stocks we need to calculate the broker fees and everything including the currency exchange. I mean, we invest to gain some, right? Not to lose more 😑
Now let's imagine if we buy US stocks with our IDR money? How much loss we're going to get? 😅 There's no way it can survive lol. Well.. it might survive but it's gonna be a lot more expensive, knowing that how unstable IDR to USD is.
So, if you have a lot of money to invest in the global market, keep in mind that you might also lose some currency along the way. That way, you have to figure out something to minimize the loss.
Have fun! 🙌
